Friday Thoughts from Pastor Tim - November 18

Dear Church Family –

Here’s yet another reason to be alarmed, depressed, and discouraged. The U.S. Senate will soon be voting on the grossly misnamed “Respect for Marriage Act.”

The “Respect for Marriage Act” will make same-sex marriage federally protected.

US Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) opposed the legislation and warned that it threatens religious liberty while not providing any meaningful benefit to same-sex marriages that does not already exist.

Matt Sharp, senior counsel with the Alliance Defending Freedom, also warned that the legislation could open Christians up to lawsuits at the federal level.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York, chairman of the Catholic Bishops’ Committee for Religious Liberty, likewise warned that the bill will be “a new arrow in the quiver of those who wish to deny religious organizations’ liberty.”

Rabbi Yaakov Menken, the managing director of the Coalition for Jewish Values, said that the act “means exposing our community to a host of bad actors willing to engage in litigation.” He also said that the RFMA is the federal government “explicitly declaring the Bible is wrong.”

And this is happening the week before Thanksgiving.

It drew my thoughts back to the deep, soul words of Habakkuk 3:17-19.

“Though the fig tree should not blossom and there be no fruit on the vines,

Though the yield of the olive should fail and the fields produce no food,

Though the flock should be cut off from the fold and there be no cattle in the stalls,

Yet I will exult in the Lord, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation.

The Lord God is my strength, and He has made my feet like hinds' feet, and makes me walk on my high places.”

Would you join me in countering Satan’s schemes by giving thanks?

For marriage and family.

For the grace and truth of Christ.

For the freedoms we have.

For our team that left for Madagascar this morning to help the cause of world missions.

For our team going to Florida next week to bless retired missionaries and pastors by repairing hurricane damaged roofs.

For our church members who are in the Ivory Coast this week to advance missions there.

For our church where we will meet Sunday to study God’s Word and encourage each other.

How can we keep an attitude of blessing in our depressing world? That’s what we’re going to talk about Sunday morning. See you then! – Pastor Tim
