Monday Thoughts from Pastor Tim - February 12

Dear Church Family –

Some public schools are encouraging kids, and helping kids, to transition to a different gender than they were born with.  Some government policies and some medical practitioners are advocating for “Gender Affirming Care,” which means, allowing and enabling a child to transition to a different gender than they were born with.

This has been a pitched battle for several years now, with law suits and legislation going both ways.

“Gender-Affirming Care” is the idea that a person may have been born wrong and therefore should be supported in transitioning.  Gender-Affirming Care…

  • Is rebellion against God’s good design.

  • Is evolutionary, believing that you are a product of time and chance, not a product of a loving, intelligent Creator.

  • Is based on the belief that you are your own god and can decide your own truth, not that there is one God and that there is objective truth.

  • Doesn’t work.  It might “work” physically and hormonally, but it doesn’t provide the peace and joy and wholeness the transitioner thinks it will.  It’s going against the grain of how God created the world and life to work.

The liberal, secular, elitist narrative is that children struggling with gender dysphoria need to “transition” their bodies to align with their preferred gender.  Anyone who disagrees is shouted down, marginalized, and sometimes even criminalized.

Into this fray steps the New York Times, one of America’s top thought influencers.  The New York Times recently reported that eight out of ten cases of gender dysphoria resolve themselves by puberty.  Also, 30% of people who start gender-transitioning hormone therapy stop it within four years.

These statistics illustrate the truth of God’s word in Proverbs 4:18-19.  “The path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, that shines brighter and brighter until the full day.  The way of the wicked is like darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.”  It’s hard to go against the grain of how God created life to work.  It works better to walk in the light.

C.S. Lewis captured the thought so well in his book, “Mere Christianity.”  He said, “God made us: invented us as a man invents an engine. A car is made to run on petrol, and it would not run properly on anything else. Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other. That is why it is just no good asking God to make us happy in our own way without bothering about religion. God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there.”

I’m glad the New York Times was willing to report the truth.  I’m glad for parents who are raising their boys to be boys and their girls to be girls—and to find freedom and fulfillment in their God-given gender.  I’m glad for Christian schools and home-schooling that supports parents in raising their children to live in line with God’s good design.  And I’m glad for churches like ours that uphold the truth and support and encourage each other to live in line with God’s truth.
