Monday Thoughts from Pastor Tim - May 6

Dear Church Family –

Life in this world is a constant battle for the truth.  Jesus said it bluntly and clearly when He said,

“You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do.  He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.  When he speaks a lie, he speaks his own native language: for he is a liar, and the father of it.” (John 8:44)

We’ve been hearing a lot about anti-Israel protests on college campuses.  Classes have been disrupted, graduations have been disrupted, and over 2,100 protestors have been arrested.

And the protests are based on lies.

Walter Russell Mead, a columnist for the Wall Street Journal, has identified and summarized the core beliefs of the protestors—the reasons they are protesting.

  • They believe Hamas wants to establish a secular Palestinian state.  The truth is Israel has, in the past, offered a two-state solution and been turned down.  The truth is, Hamas, and other Palestinian activist groups don’t want a Palestinian state, they want Israel obliterated.

  • They believe that Israeli Jews are European immigrants displacing the Palestinians.  The truth is that Israel was a Jewish homeland for centuries but the Jews were driven off.  It is also true that Israel has welcomed Palestinians as citizens and residents.

  • They believe Hamas is part of a global coalition of “progressive” movements advancing causes such as climate change, democracy, and LGBTQ rights against global capitalism.  The truth is, Hamas is not motivated by anything other than the destruction of Israel.  And human rights would not flourish under a Palestinian government.

Jesus prayed for you and me and the truth and our lives in these times.

“But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves.  I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.  I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one.  They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.  Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.  As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.  For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.”  (John 17:13-19)
