Wednesday Thoughts from Pastor Tim - August 21

Dear Church Family –

Lies come in various forms—

  • Telling an outright untruth

  • Omitting the truth, failing to tell the truth

  • Dressing up a lie as truth

The latter is happening this week in Chicago at the Democratic National Convention.

Vice President Kamala Harris is advocating for what she calls “Opportunity Economics – Lowering Your Costs.”  She is advocating that the government cap costs (fix prices) so that the American people have more money to spend and less economic hardship.  It sounds good, but it’s a lie dressed up.  Here’s the truth:

Price fixing always, inevitably leads to shortages and a black market.

Price fixing has never worked wherever it has been tried—Cuba, Russia, Columbia South America as examples.  Those economies were ruined by government price-fixing.

That’s not just my observation.  It’s the informed observation of many economists, including Jay Richards whom I heard yesterday. Jay Richards, PhD, is a Public Policy Fellow at the Heritage Foundation, author of over a dozen books, and author of essays published in the Harvard Journal and Wall Street Journal.

The Democratic Party Platform is an easy target, but what about the lies we commonly believe?

  • That I’ll be happy if I just had __________.  Fill in the blank.  “More money, more land, a different house, a different spouse, etc.”

  • That all my problems are someone else’s fault.

  • That I deserve __________.  Again, fill in the blank.

  • That pornography is innocent and victimless.

  • That God doesn’t care.

Every Sunday at Emmaus Church we meet for a “Convention of Truth.”  Before His death for our sins, Jesus prayed, “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.” (John 17:17)

The next two Sundays will be special days at Emmaus Church.  Judith and I are gone on vacation so this Sunday Dr. Gary Gromacki will be speaking.  Dr. Gromacki is chair of the Bible and Theology department at Calvary University and Seminary in Kansas City.

The following Sunday, Ben Bielenberg will be preaching at Emmaus.  Ben is one of our missionaries and is a missionary pastor in Blue Mound, Kansas.

I’ll miss you all and will be eager to be back!  I’m working on a new series of life lessons from the life of Joseph—deep lessons about forgiveness, and God’s providence through suffering, and character in crisis.  That starts September 8.

With love for Christ, His truth, and our church family – Pastor Tim
