Wednesday Thoughts from Pastor Tim - January 25

Dear Church Family –

50 years ago, Christian thinker and evangelical reasoner Francis Schaeffer published a book that quickly became influential—much read and much discussed. It was his book, He Is There and He Is Not Silent.

Schaeffer pointed out that the one central truth that changes everything is the existence of God and the Bible. “He is there.” God exists. “And He is not silent.” He has spoken through the Bible.

In his book, Francis Schaeffer said that only one truth, one worldview, “fills the philosophical need of existence, of being, and it is the Judeo-Christian God—not just an abstract concept, but rather that this God is really there. He really exists. There is no other answer, and orthodox Christians ought to be ashamed of having been defensive for so long. It is not a time to be defensive. There is no other answer.”

Denial of God and the Bible creates catastrophe and chaos. Acceptance of God and the Bible creates peace and order.

The fact that “God is there and He is not silent” is a philosophical base for life that works. But far more than just a philosophical base, it filters down into every area of life bringing peace and making sense to everything it touches. For instance, marriage and family.

Today we wrap up our 2023 Bible Conference with Dr. Scott Ardavanis on the home, marriage, and family. We have been greatly blessed with Dr. Ardavanis’ ministry elucidating the Biblical teaching on the home in a powerful and meaningful way.

The fact that God exists means that we have His active, living help in our family, and that we are accountable to Him for our family. The fact that God is not silent means that we have practical guidance for marriage and family that results in peace and joy. We are not on our own to figure out life as best we can. There is a loving, intelligent God who cares about us and wants us to live happy, and has told us how to do that.

The foundational truth that God is there and He is not silent changes everything. And again, as Francis Schaeffer pointed out, There is no other answer, and orthodox Christians ought to be ashamed of having been defensive for so long. It is not a time to be defensive. There is no other answer.”

The God who is there and is not silent has marvelously told us…

“How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.” (Psa 1:1-3)
