Wednesday Thoughts from Pastor Tim - July 10

Dear Church Family –

The looming presidential election, and the grave issues swirling around it, is noisy and large and constantly before us in the media.  It’s important.  It has consequences for our nation and our personal lives.  But the most crucial battles of life are smaller, quieter, and more personal.

50 years ago, Ray Ortlund wrote, “The twentieth-century temptations that really sap our spiritual power are the television, banana cream pie, the easy chair, and the credit card.  The Christian wins or loses in those seemingly innocent little moments of decision.”

We might say it differently today, but that’s still where life’s most crucial battles are fought.

We’re taking a few Sundays this summer to renew and refresh our grip on the Bible, and our reliance on it in our daily lives.  The Bible is God’s blueprint for our lives, our families, our businesses, and our nation.  Sadly, the Bible is frequently dismissed by our culture as old and irrelevant and part of the problem instead of the solution.

Stephen Olford, a Bible expositor of a previous generation, pointed out that our response to the Bible, and interaction with the Bible, is affected by…

1.     A physical factor – Do we come to the Bible fresh and alert, or tired and distracted?

2.     A moral factor – Do we sincerely want to know God’s will, or are we hiding sin?

3.     A spiritual factor – Do we come to the Bible seeking God, or being angry and bitter?

While we think about refreshing our personal interaction with the Bible, let’s also think about refreshing our family time in the Bible.

1.     Read the Bible together as a family

2.     Pray together as a family

3.     Sing and share together as a family

Family time with God in the Bible starts with Mom and Dad loving the Word.  That’s what fuels the joy and effectiveness of family Bible times.

It’s a joy to hear the testimonies of families praying together, having devotions together, memorizing Scripture verses together.  That’s the strength of families, and the strength of our church…and the strength of our nation.  That’s where the real battles of life are fought and won.

“…continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” (2 Tim 3:14-17)

Thanks for your joy in God and His Word! – Pastor Tim
