Dear Church Family –
I’ve been thinking the last two days about “making the most of every opportunity” (Eph 5:16).
I was challenged by an article I came across online about making the most of our casual conversations, not just settling for, “How are you doing?” and “Fine.”
I finished the article with an epiphany:
· ask people about their joy,
· and be ready to share some of your joy.
I tried it out this morning at the Dentist’s office.
Hygienist: How are you today?
Me: (Instead of my usual, “fine.”) Great! I got to spend time with a grandson before he went off to pre-school.
Hygienist: (Obviously brightening.) Oh, that’s so great! My son is 11 months old.
From there I asked her about her 11-month-old and in a matter of seconds we were into a conversation about family; a conversation we never would have had if I had said, “Fine.” I was ready to share some of my joy, and I asked her about something that gives her joy.
We who love Christ and follow His Word want to connect people with Christ and the gospel. But relationships and communication are hard and intimidating. A conversation begins with being friendly, being interested in the person, being curious about them.
Here’s some suggested questions to replace, “How are you.”
· What’s the highlight of your week so far?
· Any big wins lately?
· Working on anything exciting these days?
· Did you do anything fun this past weekend?
· Are you doing anything fun this coming weekend?
· Are you doing anything fun for Thanksgiving?
The questions attempt to tap into something the person finds joy in. Then you can share your joy—perhaps in an answer to prayer, or in something you heard at church, or something you’ve read. And before you know it, you’re sharing a reason for the hope within you.
“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” (1 Peter 3:15)
Looking forward to seeing you Sunday to honor Christ as Lord, to share our joys and sorrows, and to freshen our witness to the world.
With joy – Pastor Tim
